Household Chores: Should Children Help With Them?

Hello everyone and welcome back to my blog!

As you may remember, I am currently a student in the early childhood education program at Humber College. Throughout this program, I have been made aware of many issues concerning the overall development of children that should be discussed openly.

There are few things I truly believe in and one of them is that kids are our future.

So, shouldn't we want the absolute best for them?

Children deserve a loving and nurturing environment to grow, learn, and develop in. As they slowly grow older, parents start introducing and encouraging them to take part in household chores.

According to Simon Worthington, a published writer for the Daily Mail, 76% of children between the ages of 6 to 17, do not help out with any household chores.

Including children in household chores will impact their social emotional developmental domain in a positive way. Encouraging and allowing children to help out will introduce them to crucial life skills that will allow them to flourish in the future.

There are many beneficial reasons to include children in household chores. One of them being their need for life skills. As pointed out by Chrissy, a full-time mom, in the blog post, 11 Guilt Free Reasons to Get Kids to do Chores at Home - Yes, Really, the one main thing schools do not teach is life skills.

The ability to keep a home requires skills that must be taught such as, cleaning a home, shopping for the home, and cooking in the home. Some of these life skills should be essential but, they are not so now society has left it up to the parents to teach them how to take care of themselves. Do you think it is fair for schools to not teach the few skills that everybody would end up using throughout their lifetime?

Another beneficial reason to include your children in household chores is that it can enhance and further their overall development. During the ages of 4 to 6, children are still working on recognizing and labeling their own emotions. Those skills are apart of something called social emotional development. It is one out of five areas or domains of development.

Encouraging and allowing them to participate in household chores helps them to develop a sense of pride. Accomplishing a task that would typically be meant for an adult gives a young child a boost in their self-esteem when they finish the task. As stated in the article, Household Chores for Children, on a parenting website, "when children contribute to family life, it helps them feel competent and responsible." (para. 4)

One example scenario would be if a parent and their 5 year old child were staying at home for the day, the parent may decide to finish some household chores. The parent would then be presented with a choice, to either do the chores themself and allow the child to sit around and play the whole day or to show the child how to do simple chores for their age and help out.

Some chores that would be appropriate for the five-year-old child as stated on the parenting website, raisingchildren.net.auinclude

  • helping to sort clean clothes by family members
  • helping to set the table before a meal
  • helping to prepare a meal with supervision

Now you may ask yourself, how can I encourage my children to take part in household chores?

There are a few different ways for parents to encourage and influence their children to help out with household chores. According to James Lehman, a writer for Empowering Parents, in the article, I'll do it Later! 6 Ways to Get Kids to do Chores Now, creating a reward system for your child will work wonders as long as the reward is worth it to them.
For example, if your child has no real interest for screens such as, a t.v. or a tablet then offering more screen time would not be convincing. If they enjoyed being outside then depending on the chores they complete, you could offer than 10-15 more minutes of outside play time.

There are many reasons as to why parents should consider having their children participate in household chores but ultimately, it is their decision to make. Allowing children to participate in household chores is not only beneficial to the child but also to the parents because as the child starts learning crucial life skills, the parents can admire and celebrate as they practice those skills. As a future educator to young children, I do believe it would be in a child's best interest to develop these life skills early on not only to further their development but, also to set them up for success in their futures.

What can make your blog STAND OUT?

Tips and Tricks for an EYE-CATCHING blog

Welcome back to my blog!

It was nice to finally meet some of you in class!

Identify the Common Main Ideas

I found these texts about blogs to be helpful for all future blog posts. There were some ideas that I had never thought of. The texts mentioned a variety of tips and tricks for blog writing. Some ideas that stood out to me include....
  • Having a compelling headline to draw the readers in
  • Using a clear layout including short paragraphs, bullet point, and media
  • Starting a new blog post with an outline or draft

Spotlight a Text

I thought the first text, 10 Characteristics and Features of a Good Blog, was attention grabbing. When I opened the the link, the background color drew my eyes in.

I found the usage of shorter paragraphs made the blog easier to read. The shorter paragraphs made me more willing to read it as opposed to long paragraphs.

The subheadings were also a great addition to this post because they help to break the page up.

Something about your post that engaged me as a reader was your ability to use short paragraphs and images to create an eye-catching layout.

  Ryan from N9A
As a reader, I appreciated how you used headings and subtitles to break up the paragraphs because it made the post easy to read.

  Elizabeth from N9A
Your post stood out to me because the theme and images you chose really worked together to bring the reader in.

"Notes to Self"

I tried a few different things in this post including writing styles and layout ideas.

I worked on using smaller paragraphs to break up the writing and make it an easier read for the audience.

I will continue to use images and shorter paragraphs throughout my blog posts.

The Beginning of my WRIT 100 Journey

My Journey with Reading & Writing

Hello Readers,

Welcome to my blog! My name is Courtney K. and I am excited to begin my second semester in the ECE program at Humber College.

If you had more time to read or research what is an issue that you would be interested in exploring? Why?

I find the social sciences like psychology and sociology to be especially interesting. I particularly enjoy researching and learning about psychology. When I was in secondary school, I had a class dedicated to teaching psychology, sociology, anthropology, and economics. My intrigue and willingness to learn the subject began in that class.

Review the course learning outcomes and essential skills. Which are you most enthusiastic about pursuing? Why? Which are you most anxious about pursuing? Why?

I think that evaluating a variety of texts for reliability and effectiveness is the learning outcome I am most excited to pursue. This outcome will be very beneficial to me as I aspire to become a teacher and this skill will be very useful to find appropriate reading materials.

Reading a variety of texts to paraphrase and summarize accurately is the learning outcome I am most anxious to pursue. This is the learning outcome I am anxious about because, I believe in previous classes this was my weakest skill. I aim to work hard and strengthen this skill throughout the semester.

Review the assessment and grading system in this course. How does this make you feel? Why?

I have not worked with a grading system like this before. This new grading system makes me feel a bit anxious as I begin this new semester.
It makes me feel a bit anxious because in all my previous classes, I would receive a specific number grade. I was comfortable with this grading system because I knew exactly how hard I needed to work to earn the grade that I had hoped to achieve.

The best before dates and grace periods are also a new experience for me. I believe that this idea will be very beneficial for not only me but other students as well.
If I aim to complete an assignment by the best before date and an emergency happens or something comes up, then I would still have the grace period to hand in the assignment.

What types of materials will you need to read and/or write for your field of study and/or in your career path ahead?

I am currently a student in the Early Childhood Education program and will be mainly working in daycares and childcare centers. I will have to read policies, procedures, and other documents provided by the staff. I will also have to learn how to read and write incident reports incase of injury.

Thanks for Reading!
